Whats the difference between plasma and lcd screens ?

I hear most manfactures are moving toward LCD's now rather than plasma since I guess it is a better technology though I'm not sure.

LCD: semiconductors emit light when excited

That's correct for LED displays, but not LCD. LCDs use liquid crystals that selectively block the light from a backlight (usually fluorescent), as the article you linked to correctly describes.
