Whats the difference between one or two lines through the 's' on a dollar sign?

Iv always wondered but never did post on ATOT

Is one for heterosexuals and the 2 lines for homosexuals ? :)

the 2 lines used to be connected at the bottom, like a U over a S. no one writes it like that anymore though.

I only use one line, but I like to use several dollar signs to signify just how financially ripped I am $$$$$$5.

I don't remember what the exact difference is, but if I used a $ with double lines in it on one of my accounting papers, my professor would mark the answer wrong.

According to teh Wikipedia, there are several possible origins for the US use of the $:

This is correct, for Mexican dollars anyway. Note that the first dollar sign is inverted.


Edit: Note that Mexican currency uses/used the double line where traditionally US currency was noted with a single line. Wave a double line $ in front of the North American Union conspiracy nuts and watch the frothing.
