I have seen charts for both modern and mainstream, yet the type of music seems to be very similar.

So what's the difference?

I would think the modern would be any new type of rock genre. Mainstream is what "everyone" is listeing to, usually anything on the radio.

I swear, you would have to be a zoologist of music to figure how they categorize music now.

That does make sense. I just did a search for mainstream and modern rock charts and found that the "radio" songs make up most, if not all, of the mainstream chart.

The modern rock chart has some of the same songs as in the mainstream chart, but most of the songs are ones you aren't going to hear on the radio frequently.

But then again, if they aren't played on the airwaves or in the playlist, then how do you chart the songs? College radio maybe?
