I'm trying to find a good 300GB 7200 rpm hard drive, and I've settled on maxtor. According to newegg, both of the diamondmax 10 and maxline III drives have the same specifications. What's the difference, if any?

I have a MaXLine III drive (SATA, 16mb cache, 250GB)

I looked around before I bought it and I think the only difference is in the warranty. The MaXLine III has a 5 year limited warranty, as you can see here: http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxto...20Hard%20Drives/Midline%20Applications

and the diamondmax must have 1 or 3 year warranty, it's not really written in its specs... see http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxto...s/Products/ATA%20Hard%20Drives/Desktop

edit: http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxto...Warranty%20Periods#bare_drive_warranty

Maxline III is a SATA drive - designed and developed from the ground up to be a SATA drive.

Diamondmax 10 is primarily a standard IDE drive.

I'm curious too, whats the difference. Which one is faster? I've been looking around for a new S-ATA harddrive to buy, but i really dont know which one of these to choose from...

I've been looking at these S-ATA drives.

Baracuda 7200.8 300gb
MaxLine III 300 gb
DiamondMax 10 300 gb

Any ideas? or any other suggestions?

Maxline 3 is the exact same drive as a DM+10 except for the warrenty and in some cases the electronics (eg maxline 3 is always sata 16mb cache, where as DM 10 can have 2 8 or 16meg cache and be IDE or Sata) the Maxline 3 also had a 5 year limited warrenty where as the dm10 only has a 1 year for retail and 3 for oem

I just received 2 Maxtor Maxline III 300gb drives model 7L300S0. The specs are great, i'll be hooking them up tonight and will let ya'll know. 5 yr warranty, 16mb cache, ROHS compliant and an unheard of (I dont believe it but this is what they say) "A greater then 1million hours MTTF". paid 270 shipped for both.

Assuming you Purchase the drives with the same features then there is no theoretical difference. The MAXlines are ones that have gone through a more rigerous out the door tests and therefore larger warranty and MTBF which is required forservers and othr nearline storage uses.

The Maxlines are more of lower end enterprise drives similar to the Caviar RE. Their writeup states that Maxlines are suitable for 24/7 operation and have a 1mil MTTF rating notwithstanding the many home users who run their PC with normal drives 24hrs.

One wag suggested that the Maxlines are not built or tested any better but are more expensive to cover the inevitable higher rma's when users keep it churning 24/7.

Something similar to the above. The Maxline are native SATA, no bridge is needed.
