Whats the difference between jam, jelly, preserves and marmalade?

i think marmalade is made from fruit peels right?

I think jelly is supposed be...well, without any solids. Jam, is the next step up, with bits of the fruit still intact. Preserves have even more fruit/less jelly...and dunno about marmalade.

We got a jar of marmalade, because marmalade just sounds good. we haven't tried it yet, though...

Jelly: no fruit particles or seeds
Jam: some or all seeds left in, no fruit particles
Preserves: chunks of fruit and seeds left in

I just explained this to my kids last night. Weird.
