/head explodes

Context! I need context, or I'll type a mile-long post that still won't explain anything.

Edit - Wow. Shockingly clear metaphor from notfred. :Q

Like what they all said, but if you also think graphically that might help. A digital graph is like rectangles (or squares) because they can only be 1's or 0's, whereas analog can have like a sine or cosine wave (because they can a variety of values)

yeah, ok, that's why they convert it back to analog so you can hear and see it (in the case of video and audio)

Couldnt of said it better myself :)

Isn't it
couldn't HAVE said it better . . ..

Anyhoo, that's nitpicking and being an ass - sorry - and especially when I'm about to ask a nubish question - why is Digital > Analog better? I like my infinte shades of grey!

on an analog joystick, a slight nudge would make a little polygon mario crawl, while a slightly harder shove would make him walk, and an all out push would make him run. If it were a digital joystick, mario can only stand still or run when the joystick is pressed.

thus,
analog > digital

:)

Depends on the context entirely. As a flat out statement, wrong.

Yeah ... imagine this: you're going to a fancy million dollar party, all the top stars in Hollywood are there. Catherine Zeta-Jones comes up to you and says "Hey handsome ... what time is it?".

And then you krank out your old digital Timex! :p

*insert cartoony looser music*

Electrically speaking, is anything actually digital? When you go from 0 to 5 volts it doesn't happen right away, that's impossible. there is the briefest of time that the voltage is between 0 and 5 volts. So in all respects to true digital, that would be impossible. Digital Cell Phones are analog when transmitting, have you every seen a square radio wave, if you have, keep it quiet. Digital Cable, well nothing too digital about that. What's your opinion on this type of thinking?

So, you don't believe (infinitestimaly close approximations of) square waves exist? Mr. Fourier is turning over in his grave right now.

No, not really. I'm one of those .99999.... = .999999.... and not 1.
