The writing on the outside of the chip basically. I believe that the FX only requires registered memory, while the Opteron requires registered ECC memory.

Just clock speeds and.. the opteron has 3 Hypertransport I/O links to connect to 64 bit PCI ports.. but amd disabled two of them in the fx.. thats all really.. and unless you run a workstation/server.. they arent of much use to any normal person

you can actually use all 3 HT links with an Athlon FX if you use a dually board (with one chip, FX does not support SMP)

Almost none really, except for the fact that the FX costs about 2½ times as much as the fastest Opteron.

Actually you're wrong...

Pricing The AMD Opteron processor Model 848 will be priced at $3199 in 1,000-unit quantities. The AMD Opteron processor Model 248 is priced at $913 in 1,000-unit quantities and the AMD Opteron processor Model 148 will be priced at $733 in 1,000-unit quantities.

Jeff, you're the wrong who is wrong, this time anyway! This forum is entitled "What's the difference between the Opteron 14* and an Athlon64. Yeah, the Opteron 200-series are much more expensive than even the Athlon FX, but the 1.8ghz Opteron 144 is only $309 for the retail version, and the retail Athlon FX is going for $776 on newegg. I actually just checked the price on the 2.0ghz Opteron 146 @newegg a couple of days ago, and they had the oem version for $270. Now, it isn't even on their website.

cool, looks like ill be getting a SK8N and an Opteron 14* :)

this will be my latest foray into AMD world. hopefully this one has a better outcome than my previous few attempts. last time i tried an AMD chip, I fried 7 [yes, seven] XP 1700+ chips on 3 seperate boards and I didnt even get to OC them!!

The FX51 runs at 2.2 Ghz... it's faster than the Opteron 146, 246, and 846... I don't care what the price is, or if you can buy any of those in a store, the FX51 is still faster. If you looked at the first link you'd see that the 148, which runs at 2.2 Ghz just like the FX51 is priced at $733 in 1,000-unit quantities from AMD... that doesn't include the markup retailers have to make in order to make a profit.

To answer the question of the origional poster, "What's the difference between an Opteron 14x and Athlon 64 FX?" Pretty much just the name... The A64 FX's have all 3 Hyper Transport links just like the Opteron, the memory controller is dual channel, they use the exact same packaging.

myocardia, Opterons and A64 FX's are basically the same CPU with a different label. So an Opteron at 2.0 Ghz will NOT be faster than an A64 FX at 2.2 Ghz. I think you're just confused about the speeds and the model numbers... so I'll clarify...

Opteron x40 = 1.4 Ghz
Opteron x42 = 1.6 Ghz
Opteron x44 = 1.8 Ghz
Opteron x46 = 2.0 Ghz
Opteron x48 = 2.2 Ghz

Athlon 64 FX51 = 2.2 Ghz

Take a look at this... then tell me if you still think the A64 FX51 is twice as expensive as the fastest Opteron.

give it a while, the price will drop when newer faster 14* chips come out. the 940 pin FX will probably be that price for a while tho.

Then it will drop when the 939 pin CPU's come out.

I think it's no so important if the Opteron 848 are slower than the Fx51 you can put 8 Opterons of that model together and... at leat for me 17.6Ghz is enough... if you need more... suicide is the answer

The argument wasn't whether the 848 was faster... myocardia was saying the 146 was faster than the FX51, and it's simply not.

As for which model line is faster, neither are, they're the same damn CPU.

Someone needs to learn how to put on a HSF. I would learn before getting an expensive chip.... :Q

No... someone needs to chop their hands off cause if someone fried 7 CPU's, overclocking or not, they shouldn't be anywhere near silicon.
