what's the difference between a xeon and a C2Q?

i have a xeon e5405 in my desktop here.
it's a quad core, 333mhz bus, 12mb L2 cache, 45nm LGA771 cpu.

specs seem similar to Q9550
also a quad core, 333mhz bus, 12mb L2 cache 45nm LGA775 cpu. heck even the price is the same.

aside from the obvious differences (clock speed, socket type), what is the difference between the two?

architecturally there is no difference. being a xeon, it may be binned higher, but since it's only 2 GHz it's hard to assume even that with confidence. You can be certain that the higher-freq xeons are the cream of the crop, however.

Xenon usually use LGA771, as alyarb said, they may be binned higher. It's also seen that they run cooler and overclock better.

P.S. They're for servers.

no not really...

LOL...

its still a lottery..

There used to be a saying that xeon's were better, because of the opteron.

Opterons were better then the X2 counterpart so everyone automatically thought server chips were better bin'd...

Well i had a grip of server chips, and my i7 still beats them all.

So its all a lottery.

Were LGA775 and Xeons.

Not all Xeon's are for server DP boards.

Same can be said about the i7.

The DP chips were labled

X5570
X5580

And
