What's the difference between a UPC and a SKU?

Is a SKU ever represented by a bar-code?

My guess is that a SKU is an alpha-numeric procuct ID from the manufacturer, and a UPC is a unique numeric code that is usually paired with a bar-code representation.

Does anyone know?
