whats the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof?

correct me if i'm wrong but...

a moonroof is glass and retractable while a sunroom is just part of the roof (can't see through it) and retractable

This thread has been done over and over. People will come in with one dictionary's definitions. Then someone else will come in with a different dictionary's definitions that clash with the first. Then people start giving opinions that conflict with both dictionaries. And a whole disorderly 100+ post discussion comes down to one thing:

Some car companies call it a sunroof and others call it a moonroof.

Moon roof slides open and you have an unobstructed view of the sky. Sun roof is just a piece of glass that props the sun roof open a slight bit, which just creates a vent in the ceiling.

that would be my guess.

I am pretty sure a moonroof is a fixed piece of glass, but can be cracked open a small amount... a sunroof if a piece of glass but can be fully retracted resulting in open air in place of the glass

its whatever the car company decides to call it... they used to be called sun roofs but now its moon roofs because thats more prissy.

This is correct.

This is exactly what I was talking about. People will just start throwing opinions around - with no facts. Lots of sunroofs slide open. Everything was once called a sunroof. Then in the 1970s Ford wanted to be different and called it a moonroof. So techinically only Fords have moonroofs. But the term stuck in some people's minds and they started calling everything a moonroof. Now you have two words for the same thing. But in reality it was just different car companies calling the same thing by two different names.

I'm pretty sure one is made of glass, one is made of metal. I don't care. I call my glass panel that tilts, and slides back, a sunroof, because it lets sunlight in.

Honda has always called their retracting glass roof panels "moonroofs", it's not new. Porsche just calls it a "removable roof panel" in the USA and a "targa top" in Europe (at least, that's what they did with the 924/944/968).
