What's the difference between a STATIC and DYNAMIC ip?

As far as I know (btw, i'm braindead) there are two types of ip addresses: Static and Dynamic. I still don't know the difference between them and what are the pros/cons to using either one. I want to learn. Can you guys help me out?

Dynamic i.e. DHCP = Your are assigned an ip by a DHCP server. Usually you get an different ip everytime you connect to the server.

Static means you have the same ip and you keep it. You have to type the ip settings in your network config settings.

When you dial up(using a modem) to access the internet, your internet provider assigns you a dynamic IP address. Hence, this is not a fixed IP of yours, and when you disconnect from the service, and dial up again, the IP will be different. Many DSL connections also use this method. The advantage of this is, that you usually don't have to worry about someone trying to get into your computer, since you wouldn't be on the same IP for a long perid of time. The disadvantage is that you really can't run a DNS web server from your computer.

Usually there is no choice ?using either one?

If your ISP provided you with IP number (static IP), the number has to be ?plugged? in the right place, and you are connected.

If your ISP insist on Dynamic IP, you make the provision for Dynamic IP.
