What's the difference between a Paperback and a Mass Market Paperback?

not really sure about your specific question, but along similar lines there are the standard paperback (like Pepsi's John Grisham example) and Trade paperbacks, which is what a lot of manga, american (non-newsprint) comic books, and even some of my textbooks are. I would assume that some standard novels, especially classics, can be found in TPB form too though I will admit that I haven't really looked. TPB books are printed on thicker, better paper, and the covers are usually more durable too.

when i worked in a bookstore...

mass market paperbacks are the popular, everyone reads kinds of books. not john grisham but the romance novels and the star trek novelizations and other random books. they are printed on very cheap quality paper also. they go for like 5-7 bucks each. more around the 5 dollar level.

paperbacks are nicer quality, and a little more substance than "ramon took me back into his hut..."

listen. some books by great authors are offered in paperback and mass market paperback. For example, I just bought Stephen King's On Writing and it was available in hardcover, paperback and mass market paperback. Mass market is small pages, they look like the books you would get in the supermarket. That doesn't mean they are bad quality, but the actual page size is smaller. Paperback is bigger pages, and a higher quality printing. Paperback costs a few extra dollars then mass market, though I think it's worth it.

That's correct. The large ones are called trade paperbacks, however.
