What's the difference between a nerd and a geek?

The definition that I use is that a nerd is someone who is intensely interested in and knowlegeable about (usually technical) subjects that may bore or bewilder the general public, has social skills that are a bit out-of-step with mainstream society, but would like to be "cool."

A geek is every bit as much the first two, but thinks that's what *is* cool.

The difference is that one gives a damn about defining which is which.

I'm not going to tell which one because I don't give a damn.

You figure it out.

I say a nerd is that person that is so into starwars and math they never really get out much. They would rather stay inside and play online games than do anything else.

A geek is someone who knows a lot about computers/gadgets/etc, yet still goes out and is the cooler of the two.

A nerd typically has the social graces of a tree stump. A geek at least can initiate conversation with a woman other than their own mother.

Agreed. Thought, to be accurate, the difference between the two should be defined:

z = geek - nerd, z > 0

A nerd is a complete social inept with a tendency toward geeky hobbies. A geek is just a person with a perhaps unhealthy overwhelming interest in a particular hobby or subject.
