what's the difference between a nerd and a geek?

Nerds are the ones with the taped glasses, high water pants and pocket protectors. Geeks just like/work with science/tech stuff but can look like normal people. Both have a tendency to be anti-social or lack people skills. 😉

Geeks know technical details about their work/hobby. You could have a music geek, computer geek, history geek, sailing geek, etc.

Nerds are not much different from cave-dwelling hermits.

😉

Nerds
1. Tendency to wear glasses
2. Have worn pocket protectors at some point in their life
3. Usually wear a dress shirt to work
4. Probably wore dress shirts in school
5. Read the newspaper
6. Have a very moral-concious sense of humor, dry humor
7. Very good with please and thank you
8. Won't stop until the numbers fit perfectly
9. Are cheapskates

Geeks
1. Wear contacts if they need them
2. Have a chain attached to their keys/wallet
3. Usually wear a polo shirt to work
4. Probably wore baggy pants with dozens of pockets in school
5. Read playboy
6. Have a very moralless sense of humor, dirty humor
7. Extensive use of vulgarity
8. As long as it works, who cares
9. Spend a fortune on useless things most of the time

I should know because I'm part of a team of geeks working for a bunch of nerds, ie. Information Systems at an Accounting and Consultants Firm.

Nerd is a super genius.

Geek likes something too much.

I think it's more like:

Nerds have huge penises but are too afraid to use them.

Geeks are ashamed of their penis size but are obsessed with sex. <--- correctly describes ATOT community!

True, true. 🙂

uh, I mean, I concur with conjur!

don't know about nerds, but I know geeks are people that eat live chickens, rusty nails, etc. They used to be commonly seen in the local circus.

There is no specific characteristics for either one. It varies from individual to individual. I would go as far as saying they are two of the same.

Ahh, the age-old chart of evolution:

Newbie --> Nerd --> Geek

Newbie is pretty self-explainitory; you're a n00b, you suck, so get lost.😉 Once you actually know something, you become a nerd, but what seperates a nerd from a geek is how hard they try. A nerd doesn't know as much as a geek, and will tend to try too hard to make up for that, resulting in some very anoying people that aren't always right, forming the essance of a nerd. It isn't until a nerd truely knows enough about technology, and realizes that they are trying too hard, does one become a geek, at which point they start picking on n00bs, and the cycle starts over again.😉

a nerd is someone whose life is ruled by computers and technology

a geek is someone whose life is ruled by computers and technolody and likes it that way

I agree with this. Hard to imagine, but you could also be a relationship geek, or a sex geek.

Why do we get all these posts about semantics and definitions...
Can't someone post some really interesting math problems, please?
btw... .99999 repeating = 1
and after monty hall reveals a door, the probability of winning if you switch = 2/3

heh.

Reminds me of a line from X-Files (that a friend and I turned into a whole cottage industry):

Scully: But, Mulder, the new millennium doesn't begin until
January 2001.

Mulder: Nobody likes a math geek, Scully.

How about:

a nerd is someone whose life is ruled by computers and technology

a geek is someone whose life is to rule computers and technology.

I'll take "How about no" for $1000, Alex.
