Whats the difference between a dead pixel and a stuck pixel?

A dead pixel is permanently off. A stuck pixel displays one color - for example, it will display blue, no matter what the video signal says it should be.

No, its not a myth, I have a Compaq lappy with a funky pixel that acts up occasionally. I gently rub it and it always comes back.

Huh?

If it's "dead", it's always 'black' (off). If it's "stuck", it's always some non-black color (on). This isn't very compilcated.

No, but it's not a for sure way of getting the pixel fixed. You risk damaging surrounding pixels and unnecessarily smearing the cloatings on the LCD.

That's what I'm afraid of. I have a stuck blue pixel on my L90D+, unnoticable in normal use but in games it's pretty easy to see. I'm tempted to try the rubbing, but it's not worth the risk of smudging whatever coating may be there or ruining a bunch of pixels around it.

consequently, you wouldnt be able to notice 'dead' pixels on a black background, right?

Um, yes.

If you're not getting it by now I don't think I can really do much to help you understand.

Ok, it's time for a picture of this stuff!!!!

I'm pretty sure the information here is accurate:

Picture link.

And here's the description:
- Dead pixel, black screen. Since the pixel is dead, it remains off.
- Dead pixel, white screen. Since the pixel is dead, it remains off.
- Dead pixel, green screen. Since the pixel is dead, it remains off.
- Stuck pixel, black screen. Since the red subpixel is stuck on, the pixel stays red.
- Stuck pixel, white screen. To make white, the red, green, and blue pixels must all be on. Since the red subpixel is stuck on, the pixel is white..
- Stuck pixel, green screen. Only the green subpixel is needed, but since the red subpixel is stuck on, the combination of red and green yields yellow.

Dead pixels are reclusive and fond of staying out of sight

Stuck pixels are party animals who like to show off :p
