What's the difference between a Blackberry and a "Smart" Phone?

I'm thinking about getting one of them new whizbang phones, and I assumed Blackberries and Smart phones were the same thing, but Verizon has them listed seperately. How come?

Different OSs. One is a slimmed down Windows Mobile 5 (PDA OS) the other is a Blackberry OS. Don't know much about Blackberries other than I know they require extra software to incorporate with Exchange (which is why I have a Smartphone).

Blackberries are considered smart phones. Blackberries have evolved into their own catagory, call it market recognition; they have become a household name.

you know how sometimes people say "...for ipods and mp3 players..." or some such when in reality we all know ipods are mp3 players? it's kinda like that.
