A7N8X uses nForce 2 Ultra 400, and the A7N8X-X uses nForce 2 400. Dual vs. Single.

so for dual channel, youd need to buy special ram?

I should just go with the x-x for my crucial pc2700?

i run 2 generic 512MB (19.99 deal last week at cc) pc2700 on epox and its said dual channel.

unless you want to go cheap, i think better to get the pc3200 and run 400 syn.

To go dual channel, it's highly recommended that you run 2 sticks of the same size, same speed, same brand, same everything memory. Dual channel on AMDs is pretty much a waste and the single channel board is quite a bit cheaper with pretty much the same performance. If you're not overclocking and buying a 333MHz FSB AMD CPU, your PC2700 is fine. Unless you sell your PC2700, it's not worth upgrading to PC3200.

So yes, for the sake of price, just keep your RAM and get the -X version. But you won't get that nice nForce 2 sound that the -DX (deluxe) version has. Which may or may not justify the price for you.

For overclocking or dual channel, get the regular board. If you're going to overclock a bit get the single channel. The "x" version has a nice performance/price ratio. But it doesn't have any extreme voltage options for o/clocking. Anyway that's how I read it; I only have a kt400 "x" version and the same is true of mine.
