Whats the diff? Slot A and Sock A

Anaconda

Banned
Im think of buying a slot a 1 gig t-bird (slot a). I was just wondering, what is the difference between a SLOT A 1 GIG T-BIRD and a SOCKET A 1 GIG T-Bird (both have 200 fsb)

the differences are small- here's a link that give's a good rundown of each
tom's hardware

the socket a has 256 of on die cache- compared to the 512k of slot a- but it is off die- one thing to keep in mind, too, the slot a is being faded out, and the socket a is going to be around for a while according to amd
and for about $130 less, there is absolutely no reason not to go with the socket a- which you can also overclock very easily, and the slot a you can't- easily anyway.

are u saying i shouldn't overclock my 850 mghtz "Old" Athlon at all? I wanted to get to the HIGH AND MIGHTY 1 GIGAHERTZ level. Is it not possible?

it's probably possible, but it's a heck of a lot more trouble, and expensive. you'll most likely have to get a "goldfingers" device, which are about $30 on up, and then you have to crack the case open on your chip. way too much trouble, if you ask me. have you already bought the chip yet?

goldfingers

Overclocking a Slot-A Athlon is easy. Just be careful when you crack the case. I paid around 20$ for my GFD and can run my 800 at 950.
