they're telling her that if she has 98 on her computer, she needs XP home edition upgrade because she has 98...but if she doesn't, she'll need XP home edition...for 160 bucks.

If you have a previous MS OS, Upgrade is cheaper than full retail. But don't buy from BB.

Clean format ftw. Upgrading is nasty.

You can actually do a clean format with Upgrade edition...it'll just ask you to insert the 98 (or whatever) CD at one point as a check.

I agree that you should NEVER install an OS without formatting first.

That's probably correct. Assuming that 98 actually counts as a qualified product for XP Home Upgrade. I didn't realize it went back that far.

True on the format. But AFAIK you can do a clean install from the XP Upgrade CDs. You just need to insert the 98 or whatever CD during installation so it knows you own it.

And a little tip. Office 2000 Standard Upgrade is a qualified product to use when upgrading to Office 2000 Standard Upgrade. :D Just point the CD back at itself. I love Microsoft.

IIRC, 98 (possibly 2nd Edition) is the earliest MS OS you can upgrade from. BUt 95 definately need the full install.

I bought an OEM version of XP Pro last year for about $95. I think they've gone up a bit since then, but still a better deal than Best Buy....
