Whats The Deal With Vitamin C

Is it really the say all cure all to sickness.
I can understand having a defiency of it could be bad
but does it really help people to feel better quicker
when they are sick?

It seems that everyone brags about how much vitamin C is in stuff
Just Wondering
 
well since we are doctors do as we say,
inject orange juice to your most visible vain near your forearm,
do so at least once a day and you will be cured

Dear Reader,

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is one of the most commonly taken supplements in the United States. Generally, it is safe, but avoid taking large doses of this vitamin. As a matter of fact, an Upper Limit was set in 2000 as part of the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs). For adults, this level was set at 2000 mg per day. Taking doses this large can result in diarrhea, stomach cramps, and nausea. These unpleasant symptoms are from the vitamin being unabsorbed in your intestinal tract. Besides, it's a waste to take such a large amount because the more vitamin C you take, the less your body absorbs.

Other purported possible side effects associated with high vitamin C intake include:

* kidney stones
* reduced Vitamin B-12 and copper status
* increased oxygen demand
* becoming a pro-oxidant (a substance thought to promote cancer, heart disease, and stroke, the opposite of an antioxidant)

The Food and Nutrition Board, the committee that sets the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) and DRIs, examined the evidence for each of these claims, but couldn't find enough research to prove any of them.

One noteworthy precaution is for people with hemochromatosis, an iron overload disease. Since vitamin C increases iron absorption, supplemental C is not recommended for them.

great, i substitute soda with orange juice in subway/or fastfood,
to avoid ever dealing with kidney stones,
and now im still prone to the stones great excellent.
 
I didn't think excess vitamin C wasn't that bad and that it didn't throw anything out of balance. In a chemistry class I took we look at the system of reactions it goes through and when there's excess it just leaves the body without any problem.

Lol, the above is talking about excessive intake of vitamin C. Unless you're grinding up 10 vitamin-c tablets in each glass of orange juice and drink 10 glasses of orange juice a day you should be fine.

I'm not sure how much I buy the "danger" in that though, at least negative affects starting at 2g(you can see that the government couldn't find enough research to validate any of the claims). Sure, I'm sure too much is bad, but nowhere near 2g.
Vitamin-C with it's anti oxidant properties is very important for a healthy body.

My nutritional science professor last semester said that Vitamin C has been proven to help cure the common cold, but it all it does is shorten the length of the cold by .1 days or something. (I could be off on the number.) So it turned out that once every five years, you shorten one cold by one day.

So yes, vitamin C is good for you, deficiencies are bad, but it's not a cure-all.
