What's the deal with university tuition, for non-students?

I'm out of college and work full time now, but I wanted to take a photography class. I checked and at NYC Tisch, it's $1,037 per unit. So one class is over $4K.

Why so expensive? And is there any way to take a class that's less expensive, but not at a community college?

You still can just figure out the class schedule and hope that it's a fairly large class so you can sneak in =)

How much for in state?

NYU is private.

SUNY schools are about $4-5k without financial aide for students (no room and board).

My tuition is about $35k/year (University of Chicago).

Maybe they think you are out of state? It's about $110 per credit hour here at FSU.

That seems pretty high for in state tuition. If the average student is taking 30 credit hours a year thats $31k or so per year in state. Maybe check to make sure they have you as an in state resident?

Was gonna say the same thing. Where is the problem?

The idea the university is trying to convey with it's huge prices for non-students is that you are not worth their time and that degree-seeking students should have priority for the classes. Get the hint. Going through college, the only thing that annoyed me more than students with rolling backpacks is people who there for fun because they ALWAYS sidetracked the professor with their own personal hobby questions - It was never a concern for them to know the material because they really didn't give a damn what grade they got in the class.

My tuition next year is $1,178 per credit hour. And I have 11 credits to take this fall instead of the usual 9. :(

I'd have to agree with this, especially if this isn't part of a degree-seeking program. What's wrong with a community college if you're just looking to begin a new hobby/trade? NYU charges about $35K for full-time undergrad tuition without dorm, food. It'll cost about $50K for the full package. The high fee for your Tisch class isn't all that surprising.

I was about to say the same thing. Especially when my local community college has a better darkroom than most of the universities around here. It may be the same for you too.

Expecially when at many large Universities the entry level photo classes are going to be full to the brim. At a CC you can get more personalized lessons.

I took 24 units last semester, cost under $500. Junior college is sweet. (Although my books cost more than my tuition.)
