What's the deal with Thunderbird/Duron Motherboards?...

What I mean, is I have the kt7-raid, witch is great for performance in my views, but it just has so many problems with my config. Now everyone jumps right out and say get the MSI KT7 Pro2, but aren't most of the problems b/c of the via 133 chipset witch both boards use? Wouldn't you get the same usb, hd, soundcard, instability problems with both?

If im wrong let me know, If im right, what's coming that we should look forward too. Is the 760 board going to be that stable, and a best buy in the future?

Just some troubling questions, Thanks for any replies

some may say its Abit's quality control problem, but I will put that aside.

meanwhile, what instability problems you are hearing?

I'm having no problems with mine. If you do a little research and set it up properly you should have no problems. In most cases, it's also wise to do a fresh install of Windows when getting a new board, in most cases if it's the same chipset you can squeak by.

MSI is known for highly-stable mainboards, not over-clocking monsters.

ABIT is known for making over-clocking monster mainboards, not stability.

As it stands now you can't have both, without alot of fiddling, time, and experience. Also some people consider a system that locks-up "only" 3-5 times a week a stable system. That is their opinion, not mine...

There are alot of people who just get tired of all the over-clocking fiddling, and stick to more stable systems. Perhaps you are leaning this direction, thats not a bad thing. Not everyone likes spending hour after hour fiddling after a crash wondering?

What caused that lock-up?
-software?
-power surge?
-config problem?
-hardware failure?
-virus?
-corrupted file?
-deleted file?
-missing file?
-resource problem?
-heat?
-low voltage?
-over-clocking issue?

yeah break apart rightly said, i've been on systems of my own that, when i use em, i can run for weeks months, with out crashing, never done an all out enurance test, on either of em, but every one says with amd you can have daily crashs, being used to crashs only when my idiot brother touches things, i really worry, but then i remember my install of win 98, i think its that that keeps me running, i've made it nearly impossible to kill that install, and if when i try amd later this month that record still stands, im gonna make an image of that drive, ship it to bill gates for autopsy and tell him to perfect that, and he will rule the world

most of the problems i see with these boards are due to all of the addon features using up resources and causing resources to be shared. If your expirencd with computer hardware and operating systems and your comfortable applying patches and fixes as they are released and you dont mind installing new drivers as they are released then these boards are very stable and preform great. Ive had no problems with my a7v whatsoever. These boards are not for everyone, and honestly if your not comfortable with doing the things that need to be done in order to make your hardware function properly you shouldnt be building your own systems or worring about these details on your own, you should consider pre configured systems or possibly having a local shop build and trouble shoot a systems so that you dont break it. Otherwise its a great learning expirence to make things like this function properly and it can be rather rewarding to watch your preformance levels out do anything else around all because you put a little effort into a hobby you enjoy.

Antman,

The problems are NOT due to the KT133 chipset. The problems are with a specific implementation of the chipset and the BIOS that is used. ABIT cuts corners with Quality and it shows. The VIA reference mobo shows how the mobo should be designed but each manufacturer alters the reference design.

red dawn, have you ever tried msi's slocket? i know its a totally off thread to ask, but i want to get an intel chip in my sys before i make the jump to amd, so i can have a nice comparison of equally mhz'd systems

RED DAWN:
why do you say that IDE raid is just a gimmick? I set it up for my personal web server (which also works as my personal fileserver, print server, and mulitmedia PC at times) and I must say that it makes a pretty substantial difference in performace...and since I spent a whopping $350 for 90 gigs of raid space....I dont feel as bad as I would if I spent about $800 + for the same performance and less space from a SCSI setup.

Just wondering why you think it is not worthwhile...something I am missing? (remember that the cost of an extra 45 gig HD and a promise fasttrack is well under $200)

I recently bought both a KA7-100 and KT7-Raid. Both are rock solid and perform great for me. Have you gone over to the Unofficial KT7 FAQ page to see if you can isolate your problems?

Thanks Everyone for the replies, don't get me wrong the kt7-raid is a great board.

It's sorta of a pain, but when you do fallow all the steps that say that kt7-faq has, things work very well. Im currently running on raid-0 with win2k. When I first started I made sure I started from scratch no old files or anything, all fresh, and worked great with win2k.

I've only had 2 problems, 1 minor and 1 major.

First yesterday I tried to istall win98 from scratch , like I have many times before on other computers. Well at the end of the setup, it started just resetting, like almost the cpu was too hot, well the cpu is running a real low temp, and isnt overclocked at all. So that wasnt it. So after doing it three times it booted up fine, and finished installation. I got into the GUI, installed all the latest via and highpoint drivers. Was working just as good as it could, and then I install the sblive drivers, I reboot. And it crashes right at the Sign in page like 12 times in a row, or the curson frezzes but the mouse still works. It happened right after the sb live, but it could also have been when I installed the drivers for the nic card aswell. So no win98 for me =(

And Second, USB doesnt work for me in win2k, and im almost sure it wont in 98 either, but never got the chance to see.

Anyways Thanks to Everyone who has replied
