We have a lot of four way stops here, a lot of people go flying up to them, slow down a bit and swerve over to the far right and just blow through them (like they are driving in hte crosswalk).

Eitherway it's running a stop sign, what's the purpose?

It's one symptom of those afflicted with IDS - Impatient Dick Syndrome.

Other symptoms include blowing through turn signals, cutting into lanes at the last second when lanes merge or are close, and weaving in and out of traffic at the risk of others only to get held up at the next stoplight.

Here's a few more:

Lots of cars stopped at a redlight. Drive on shoulder passing all cars pretending to make a right turn. Floors it when light turns green to cut off first car.

One lane freeway on ramp splits into two. Pass all cars waiting in line and cuts in at the split by driving on the shoulder.

Blowing through a red at the freeway on ramp lights.

This may just be a symptom of not being familiar with this traffice device. I never saw the traffic signals on an on-ramp till I went to California. What the frig is with that nonsense? People in Cali don't know how to merge?

On ramp lights are fail. I'd love to hear the logic that sitting for 5-10 minutes at one of those stupid things saves any time at all.

I like the people who stop and take their time when it's clear, but roll through it and pull out like a bat out of hell to make sure they are first if another car is within 3 seconds of passing through the intersection.

Traffic control my friend. They are only on during high traffic times.

I see a lot of those that zoom up the turn only lanes and end up going straight too.

I could almost swear you've been driving my route to work lately.

I hate those people that drive around everyone on the right and then go straight when the light turns. If they do it when I'm there I cut them off.

As a regular CA commuter who has lived in lots of areas and seen freeways from many directions, I can tell you that metering lights are a godsend. They only come on during commute hours, and only if sensors indicate there is heavy traffic. Occasionally a set will fail, and when they do, it fucks up the commute for everyone. If you only have to go one or two exits, waiting might take longer. But if you need to go farther, or you're coming from farther upstream/out of town, they can shave 30 minutes off a commute, easily. The merge isn't the problem, it's that when you cross a certain point in traffic density, everything grinds to a halt even though you only added a few more cars. The lights are set to ride the threshold just below gridlock, and allow more total traffic flow.

We have them in the UK, too, on some of the major motorway networks. They work.
