I see them on Engadget, Digg and everywhere else, but I don't get why they are soo popular.

Anyone have any idea?

Nerds found they could never compete when it comes to "size" on the way up so they flipped the rule sheet upside down...

seriously though, when you get down to it, you don't need to game every where.

A lot of people are just looking for something more than a PDA can offer and aren't looking for the power consumption and raw computing power that a laptop or even a nuttered laptop can offer.

enter the eepc: the compromise

I see that it runs a version of Linux. Does that mean most all Linux apps will work?

Given that the vast majority use their PC's to just surf the web and email why wouldn't they be popular?

It runs Linux, but the hardware is pretty dinky. Something tells me that a Linux version of Quake IV or something like a big MySQL database wouldn't run on it too well.

I just found out that in the US, they were the most wanted Christmas gift.

I'm looking at YouTube videos, and people have put Ubuntu and XP on them. The XP ones can run games like Unreal 2004 at about 24fps. Which isn't bad at all considering the specs.

I have been researching these things for about an hour now I now I want one! I want the 8GB White but they seem to be sold out everywhere I look, with most sites stating a Feb. 8th restocking.

$400, instant on, 2 pounds, full QWERTY keyboard, superbly portable - what's not to like? I may grab a 8.9" LCD version if they up the resolution from the current 800 x 480.

To expand: I keep looking for a laptop that'd be perfect in bed, or to throw in my sling bag to take on commutes. I doubt there's a better fit for that need than the Asus EEE. A full-size laptop is, to me, too large/heavy for those uses.

That's called the Starbucks/Apple effect.

I think I'll try and wait until this one is released.

Too bad the resolution for the 8" is still the same low res...

The resolution is the one thing holding me back from buying one. 800x480 just isn't practical for any serious usage imho.

Version 2 wil be 1024x600. If it pillarboxes an XP install would be good for old 800x600 Win9x games.

looking for the 8 GB version

Just get a 4 GB SD card and use that for the extra storage.

let's see - it's small, lightweight, designed to use small amounts of power, has a minimalist OS/software packaging, and has SSD instead of a traditional hard disk. makes for a great little travel laptop, or a carputer (what i'd use it for)

That's called the Bandwagon effect.

They stopped selling Bandwagons in the early 1900's.

This is the 21st century, it's now called the Apple effect. :p

I learnt something just now.

The 8Gb version, which sells for $499, has a swappable SSD. So you can upgrade it's storage as SSD's get cheaper.

The other ones are soldered onto the board.
