What's the deal with the x600 and the 6600?

My cousin & I are looking into getting new gfx cards very soon. We still have the old standard GeForce3, and it just doesn't cut it.

The ATI x600 and the GeForce 6600 are supposedly very affordable and very high performance cards, but they apparently use PCI Express. My question is, does the motherboard NEED to have PCI Express support for the cards to work? Can I just drop these cards into a standard motherboard like an Epox 8RDA+?

If anyone has any suggestions for good but affordable 3D cards (under $270), let me know. I kinda prefer nVidia to ATI.

Thanks..

No you can't drop them into your agp8x slots. 6800nu is the best for around 300. Below that I'd say 9800 Pro for 200 or so I haven't looked at pro prices in a while...

if you do decide to move to a PCI-EX mobo, understand that the 6600 is 3 times as fast as the x600.

The x600 is the PCI-E version of the 9600.

The upcoming x700 and 6600 will be the new midrange parts when they are released in Sep/Oct. The NDA for the 6600 benchmarks expires in a week, so definitely wait to see how it performs. The AGP version of the 6600 will be out about 3 weeks after the PCI-E version.

OWNED

Err, pre-release numbers from nVidia is owning someone?
You can't own someone like that.

Sorry, revoked. (And saying "It IS 3 times as fast" is misleading. "It can be 3 times as fast in ONE game according to nVidia pre-release numbers" is more accurate)

Thanks for playing.

So you've got a problem against Asian sites, that already HAVE the technology, and you won't believe a test conducted by nVidia, whats there to cheat off of? The x600 is just a 9600 ported over to PCI-E X16. Just look at the specs of the 6600 and 6600 GT, and it really isn't that hard to believe it's 3x faster. ;)

No, I don't just believe what I see on web sites with no track record.

The 6600 is possibly a killer card, but NV doesn't buy itself any fans by launching it months before it's available to the masses.
