I had the Nexus S which had a very slight curve but the screen wasn't curved, just the glass but I didn't notice the curve at all. The Samsung is curved the wrong way, the LG is curved the right way.

Not saying I agree with Samsung, but here is my guess at why they curved it in the direction they did.

It seems like most people don't have much of an issue with the height of a phone. It's more about the width of phones when trying to fit it comfortably into a pocket. So Samsung may be thinking that if we have it curved on the sides in portrait mode, that narrows with width of the phone a little bit. And also because your thigh is curved in that same direction it might rest more comfortably in the pocket. Maybe that'll work. I dunno, I think I'd have to own it to really know.

Depending on the curvature and the viewing distance, a curved screen could be brighter and/or sharper because pixels are all perpendicular to the eye. But, as a whole, it's more gimmick.

I think it's more about "We can do this!" type of move. Or maybe they want to preemptively claim they're the first to introduce such techs. (notwithstanding whatever patents are at issue)

it may not have any application now but i'm glad to see them working on unique screen technology. it's not like flexible screens are gonna be invented overnight.

This. Seems like a lot of tech enthusiasts are an impatient bunch. You don't just go from A to C, you gotta go through B first.

Since those phones seem to only be showing up in China, I wouldn't be surprised if they were counterfeit copies. Sounds like they have a lot of that in China. Thought it was funny looking though. :)

Yeah it's pretty damned goofy. My brain wants to think it's some kind of bad photoshop because it just looks so wonky.
