What's the deal with the 1280x1024 res?

1280x1024 actually looks pretty good(if flawed) for business apps like excel/word, even on a 4:3 monitor, it gives you more vertical desktop area(1024 compared to 960). However, I'd rather prefer accuracy on my 19" over desktop space(btw, chicks would look fat with 1280x1024 🙂).
