There was alot of controversy a few years ago with Spectek nand but I don't remember any agreement on whether it is tier 2 and therefore not as good as tier 1 Micron/Samsung/etc brands. Do these 'tiers' even exist or is it something that made up? Some fabless ssd brands today are probably using Spectek.

Background-
It started when OWC said that a 'Micron rep' said that "“It is a very brave action to take, using these (Spectek) chips in a data storage device".
Anand didn't seem to think that there was an issue using Spectek AL nand. Someone in an old thread #26 says each Spectek chip is individually tested/binned.

Was I being trite? Could someone explain if testing individual chips within a wafer still relegates it to 2nd tier.
Should I be wary about ssds from Adata, Supertalent etc that probably use these sort of nand chips.

Spectek!

WOW!

I haven't seen that name in ages. The company is a subsidiary of Micron just like Crucial. I do not know of any modern consumer ssd's using Spectek flash memory.

I maintain an ssd database that is listed in several well known forums. Here is the link:

http://www.johnnylucky.org/data-storage/ssd-database.html

The database identifies the Flash Memory used in each consumer ssd and has links to technical reviews. Currently it appears that no consumer ssd's are using Spectek flash memory.

BTW - Adata's current best seller, the SP550, uses S.K. Hynix flash memory. Supertalent doesn't offer much in the way of consumer ssd's.
