OK I have read several times on the forums lately you need a diskette with proper drivers to get XP installed??? But you do not need drivers when installing Windows 2000.

What if my next box has no floppy drive??? Could I possibly pull the drivers from a USB thumb drive during the load???

Thanks

during the xp install it will prompt you to insert the floppy disk for any third party raid or scsi drivers, this disk usually comes with the motherboard.

like any other hardware device, if windows does not have the driver for a device built in, it will need to come from somehwere, this is true even for windows 2000 and XP if the generic host adapter windows uses does not work with it.

as far as building a system with no floppy, since i hardly ever use one i did this too but i do have a floppy handy to plug in those few times i need one. the floppy is not quite dead yet. :)

well if you put the drivers on the XP cd you might be able to get away with not having to load the drivers. I think I will try that out on my next install.

Buy a used 1.44 FDD for $5 and hook it up when you do a clean install of Win 2K.

I built a pc and needed to grab the floppy from a 10 year old pc so that I could load the drivers for some sata drives. The floppy lives, keep one handy in your desk.

So I take it you can browse a CD for drivers? It doesn't have to be on a floppy, right?

Can I then just create a folder with drivers on XP installation CD?

It's more than that, you have to modify certain files so that during Windows setup it detects the new drivers and installs them.

It's a somewhat lengthy process but it beats buying a floppy drive if you don't have one already, IMO anyways.

From a clean install or a upgrade?

I assume it was a upgrade as I pretty much doubt WinXP has native drivers for SATA controllers.

The only way you did a clean install to a SATA drive is if it's native SATA....my guess is it was a i865PE or i875P based system since they make the SATA ports act like normal IDE channels.

There is a way to modify the XP setup files and make a new CD so they look for the drivers somewhere else, but it's much more time consuming than just picking up a $5 floppy drive. Another way around this would be to install XP on a IDE drive, make a ghost image of the drive after the fresh install of XP/2K, with the correct SATA drivers loaded, and then clone that image onto the SATA drive.

It may, but I haven't heard of any direct confirmation of it. My guess would be it will since SATA is becoming more and more popular.

No

Actually, yes, all versions of windows already contain them... they are no different than the PATA ones...
however if your mobo contains a harddrive controller seperate (running through the PCI bus) that you are installing it from then as it has always been w/ PATA drives you need the disk...

Just found this walkthrough of making a XP/2K CD that includes the SATA drivers so no floppy drive is needed. It's a bit time consuming, but it should only need to be done once.

One of my questions still is you need drivers XP which came out in late 2001 and Windows 2000 you do *not* need any drivers. OK the older OS has the drivers???

What about the VIA SATA controller on many K8T800 based motherboards. AFAIK they don't run off of the PCI Bus either but they still require drivers that don't come native with WinXP.
