What's the deal with non-kiddie humor in kids shows?

Ever noticed how some cartoons have all this humor which no average kid can possibly understand? I have seen that in many cartoons, and most recently in Hey Arnold! They showed a protest scene and it had many references back to the 60's. What kid would actually understand all that?

You realize that a lot of people who watch cartoons are adults watching the program with their kids, right? Same reason why any feature-length animated cartoon has some "adult" humor as well.

hahaha...when you said that...that's the first show I thought of...

There's this one show where the guy keeps asking the chick to get in the kitchen and make him a sandwich and it made me fall over laughing....but I was like a kid is never gonna get that

They're trying to transcend target marketing to appeal to a more broad market. Look at all the Pixar movies - they have the same sort of humor.

If you were a parent, and your kids were dragging you to the latest flick, wouldn't you appreciate something in the movie targeted to your age group?

As people have said, they're trying to subtly target the parents. If there is a choice of two shows for a parent to watch with their child, then the parent will choose the show that they like best. So the show are trying to make themselves more palatable to the parents in the hopes of gatheriing more ratings.

one of my faves, the one set in the Russian Revolution where Rasputin has a toothache: Yakko whacks Rasputin over the head with a mallet and says "How about a little Anastasia? Obscure joke, talk to your parents." :D

I loved the woodstock episode.
"What band is that one stage"
"Who"
"Yes, Who is on stage"
"Who"
"Yes who"
"The band on stage"
etc..
