They want people to look at them and see how "badass" they are on their cool motorcycle. It's sad. Then they try and hide behind some ridiculous arguments like "loud pipes save lives" to justify it. They're an embarrassment to true motorcycle enthusiasts.

Yes, I do ride.

Sorry, Vespa doesn't count.

In my opinion anyone on 2 wheels is taking the same risks sharing the road with cages, and deserves the same respect.

Keep the rubber side down. 😀

It's just a big fuck you to people in cages.

Problem is @ 2:AM I'm not in my cage, I'm in a bed trying to get some sleep!. Some try to keep the rev's down a bit in residential neighborhoods and some don't give a fuck and will wake up an entire street and those are the assholes IMO..

There are two guys on my street who own Harleys with extremely loud pipes. Neither one of them have ever ridden down my street at 2AM.

Personally, I'd rather see cops cracking down on trucks with illegal lift kits before they crack down on bikes with loud exhausts.

You can't label one universal opinion on all bikers. Even on all harley riders. some (most?) are indifferent, uneducated a-holes who could care less what you think about their loud pipes let alone explain why they have it.

However with that said, motorcyclists are at a much higher level of danger than cars when out on the road. They rarely get pulled over for things like loud exhaust or riding with high beams (in the daytime) constantly on because there are so many negligent car drivers out there.

I do feel its safer for riders to be heard and seen

High beams in the daytime are not only legal for bikes, but recommended.

It's so the engine doesn't stall on them...but they'd never admit that. ;-)

The newer evo motors won't stall at lights. The old motors will. Mine can idle for about 30 seconds until I have to give it a little blip to clear the carb and keep it running.

We had one guy nearby who used to do it but thank god he moved, the truck situation is also a major safety issue, it's irrelevant how well a car maker designs a vehicle when the truck is jacked so high it's homemade steel-bar bumper misses the crumple zone completely and makes a bee line for a headshot. Here in FL we have TONS of these modded trucks around, I haven't seen any getting pulled over either, I just give 'em a wide berth and keep away..

when driving near them I'm glad they're loud... when in my own house, I hate hearing them scream down the street.

My next door neighbor has a Harley and he revs that thing for 10 minutes on Sunday mornings. That's just as bad as the guy who mows his lawn at 9am Saturday. Have you no respect for people around you?

That was in regard to the opinion presented by Harley Davidson's CEO in that linked memo thing.

My ears don't appreciate it much when you're a few feet from me. Also, I can see you... I have these things called eyes that let me do so 😛.

They should be ticketed.
no shit.

HD straight pipes are illegal under our Ontario Highway Traffic Act. The police know this and still they refuse to ticket them. Meanwhile, I am running Walker Super Turbos on my Mopar with a completely legal exhaust and I get pulled over and warned about the noise.

Section 75:

75. (1) Every motor vehicle or motor assisted bicycle shall be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise and excessive smoke, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, straight exhaust, gutted muffler, hollywood muffler, by-pass or similar device upon a motor vehicle or motor assisted bicycle. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 75 (1).
