What's the deal with long pinky fingernails?

I went to a barbershop today and the guy who cut my hair had a pinky fingernail on one hand so long that it was even with the fingertip of the finger next to it.

Cultural thing? Fashion thing? Coke-sniffing thing?
 
It's a coke thing. And not the cola.

Edit: We had a woman at work whose fingernails were so long they curled around back towards her hand and headed back out. No kidding they were at least 10" long. She was a janitor and you can probably guess she didn't do much cleaning.

I always wondered how she wiped her butt!
