Before you ask for my mancard, I have a wife. I watch a lot of shows with her because she doesn't have as much free time to watch TV as I do....I let her have control of the remote when we're together. It's courtesy since she'll be making more money than me when she gets out of school. ;)

I don't have anything against people being gay. I understand that everyone's different and has different feelings, yada, yada...I'm not trying to offend anyone.

My rant here is that there are about 20 different shows on A&E, TLC, HGTV, Style Network, etc... They all either have something to do with decorating houses, dancing, or clothes. They seem to pick the most flaming guys as hosts. The problem is that most of the people are annoying, have bad taste in clothes/interior design, and their only qualification seems to be that they are flamboyant and obnoxious. "Ohhhhhh SSSSssssssister"

I would expect a TV host to at least bring something to the table and have some REAL expertise or personality. A good example is the show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy....I missed out on this show and maybe saw 1 episode... The guys there were a little over the top, but at least they had taste and made decent decisions. The copycats out there are really lacking. I wish they'd just fail already, go off the air, and be replaced by qualified people (gay or not). My rant can be summed up by saying producers are trying too hard....Aside from Law & Order & The Playboy Channel, TV sucks.

the problem is the shows you're watching. I watch them, too, as mrs seems to dominate the remote, too, so we're watching home renovation shows or whatever else and the only guy who gets into this full time is a flame-master, so it appears to us that more people on TV are gay. To some degree it's probably true, but not as substantial as it appears to us, watching the crap we do.

It's the target demographic. I am a heterosexual male but I do enjoy the house shows. -1 for stereotypes. Anyway the target audiance for the shows are basically white women and every white women seems to be facinated with with young gay men.

The flamboyant gay male is what sells in the media. Not many people would find it interesting to have a few normal looking gay guys doing a show on how to rebuild a transmission or something.

Women do love it too, I don't know why.

The trend is older than a year too.

I'm female and I don't watch the flaming homosexuals on TLC and the Style Network... haha. I want my CSI and Law & Order: SVU, man.

Exactly.....not only that, the viewers agree with whatever those guys say just because their image creates perceived expertise. It even bothers my wife when she watches some of the shows. I think the show, "10 Years Younger" on TLC is the best example that the wife doesn't like...

Women love it because a lot of gay men are understanding and caring. Gay men don't try to exploit women the same as straight guys. (At least in from observations.) See, you can learn some good stuff from gay guys! :p

Gay men are no more "understanding and caring" than straight men for the most part. In fact some of the worst misogynists I know are gay men.

Interesting. However, it seems like those gay men who aren't misogynistic get along well with women. :)

The type of shows they appear on don't really appeal to me, so I have avoided the irritation somewhat. Once in awhile an Ad for those type of shows comes on and all that I can think is how irritating that show must be. It's not really the fact they are Gay or even their effeminate voice/body language, it's that perma-mega-smile and the hyped out superlatives all piled one on top of the other. I get the same irritation when ET comes on and Mary Hart and friends start the Gossip in the same manner.

It's the channels you're watching. The main demographic is white women and gay men. It's basically filling a stereotype that all gay men are flambouyant and good at interior design which is simply not true.

And talk about Law and Order being gay! You should see Chris Meloni back in the Oz days, he's kissed more men then I have!

His best role ever was Freakshow.

My brother is gay, and privatately he has not so nice things to say about women, although he has quite a few lady friends.

His favorite line is "Why settle for old fish when you have a nice juicy sausage?"

And for the record, he would make a great home decorating/cooking show/craft show host...

it seems to be a straight female thing.

my own hypothesis is that they think having their own stereotypical pocket queer will suddenly turn their life fabulous (but notice how every gay man in straight media tends to be either have no sex life or a stereotypically promiscuous sex life).

ROTFLAMO - I had an convo this weekend that almost paralleled the Chris Meloni bit while I was watching law and order. That said, I think if you look at television as a whole, I don't believe that it going as gay as you think - 20 shows, out of what.....thousands?

Personally I don't think the stereotype is a good thing, and I avoid it at all cost (I'd say I don't fit it, and I won't be in a relationship with anyone who does), but publicly I don't give a shit. I'm a live and let live kind of guy.

I wish more did - I don't think there would be anything that would turn me on more than a guy wanting to work on a vehicle with me - would make my day :p

Because you put one openly gay person in a show and all of a sudden its a "gay show", but apparently the ones with all straight people are just "shows".

No, it just seems like every other new show that comes out has to have a gay person in it.

Much higher proportion of gay/straight than real life.

I've also noticed this for several years now.

It's all about demographics. Throw in a gay, and suddenly you capture a whole new audience.

Because gay people are some of the funniest and wittiest people. They're like women trapped in a man's intelligence.
