What's the deal with a CA Senior Citizen Identification Card?

A week ago I go to my local DMV office with application in hand to renew my driver's license. I pay the $33 fee, am told that they will give me a free Senior Citizen Identification Card in addition to the driver's license if I say so. She said something about it being a new thing, but the reasons escaped me. I figured "free" why not? Both my new driver's license and SC ID card arrived in the mail today in separate envelopes and each was stick-um affixed to an identical backing document. They look the same except that the SC ID card doesn't say "DRIVER LICENSE" and doesn't say "RSTR CORR LENS" and "CLASS C".

So, I'm wondering why I would want this thing, the SC ID? And why would they extend this seemingly redundant object to me and free? Obviously my driver's license proves my age just as well and is a valid ID. The only advantage I can see in having this is that I have two IDs now, but that's kind of weird and questionable.

Here in Illinois we have ID cards and DL cards. The only difference here is that with the DL you can drive. Maybe it's the same in CA?
ID cards are for people who don't want/can't drive but still need to present a state issued ID for age verification purposes.

They have state-issued DL and ID cards here in MA, although, I don't know if you can actually have both.

It's odd they would give you both. My guess is the ID card was intended for seniors who could no longer drive (i.e. all of them :p ).

It's California. Trying to determine the logic behind this is probably a waste of time. More than likely some politician's son-in-law owns the company that makes the ID cards.

Is there some sort of state benefit for seniors you need the ID card for? My only other thought is CA is actually run by a secret enclave that wants to make room for new generations Logan's Run style and this is a way for them to identify everyone who's time is up

That's exactly what I thought. So why did the CA DMV offer me a free senior ID card to go along with my driver's license? Why have 2 ID's?

BTW, I passed my computer questionnaire about driving laws. There are 3 allowable mistakes before you fail and I got to the point where I had made 2 mistakes, so I slowed down, trying to make sure I had some confidence in my answers. I passed with 2 mistakes. Next time I should bone up some. I didn't prepare at all. There's shit online for that.
Senior card = ask for discounts everywhere hehe
I don't usually think to ask. I have sometimes, though, but seldom been rewarded. I was told at my dentist's office that they have a senior discount. Then when I reached that age I asked for it and they told me that they didn't offer it anymore because they're doing fine without it! I still go to him, he's a great dentist! When he sent me to a periodontist and found out his rates (ouch!) I figured I'm doing well enough with my dentist!

So you can get a 33¢ coffee at McDonald's. I just use my face as proof of age.
Does your experience harmonize with an expanded danger of cracks in more seasoned grown-ups? How about falls, a typical issue that prompts inability and passing in more seasoned individuals? Maybe I should ask Olds and Boomer.
