Xbox Scene has everything you need to know, but to make it short, you can turn your Xbox into a full blown media center type PC. There's a ton of homebrewed apps to to all sorts of stuff with a modded Xbox.

An XBox is just basically an extremely portable computer, and once it's modded you can use it to it's full potential, and it becomes much more useful than before.

It is important to know the different types of modding. There is actual hardware modding, where you get chips and emulators and what not so you can play xbox PAL games as well as NTSC, or you can make it faster. The downside, no xbox live. Also there is just the pretty side of modding it. Paint it, drill it, light it, you name it.

There's also simple little things like replacing the crappy stock ATA33 hard drive cable with an ATA 66\100\133 cable (you'll need a 22" or longer cable to do it right, but I used one from a WD hard drive retail box).
