What's the deal on evaluation hardware? Did I get ripped off?

Okay, so I bought something from someone online in a forum, and he agreed to ship first due to lack of refs, and I received it in a timely fashion.

The question I have is this: This monitor is not offered in stores yet, and it came with a slip that says "30-day evaluation" item. Does anyone know what this means? If i send this guy payment, am I going to get billed after 30 days for it? It wasn't even shipped to my name, it was shipped to some guy named "DAVID" at my address.

If anyone knows anything about evaluation copies of hardware please fill me in. I'm not sending payment until I understand what's going on . He claimed he had 2 for a dual monitor setup and no longer wanted them, and that he got them for 950, then he told me later he got them for 800 and can get more. It's 100% sketchy to me.

The last thing I want to do is send out $800 and then get billed for retail price b/c i "didnt send the monitor back after evaluation" if you know what I mean.

I also made sure to go through ebay b/c he had it listed on there, so I have an official "eBay contract," whatever that's good for.

it does sound pretty shady. seems like the guy runs a hardware review site or works for a company that does. that's the equivalent of selling off "Not For Resale" items. i wouldn't worry about being held responsible/liable tho'. to the best of your knowledge, you were not aware of the fact before you received it. if it really makes you uncomfortable, then send it back to the guy and just swallow the cost of shipping.

well it's really sketchy. he claims his brother has an insider at the company, so what happened is he bought 2 of them, then decided he wanted to go back to school and needed the money.

so he had to sell them to someone else b/c he couldnt cancel the order.

so he sent it to me, but had to put a "company" name for it. it's obviously some kind of company evaluation, but i dont know if i actually have to return it or what the deal is.

needless to say he's not getting his money till i clear it up with KDS. please post if you know anything about this sort of thing

yeah it's strange. i'm not a big fan of getting things at my addy addressed to someone who is not me
