read my edit. i was wrong with the date...

Registration fees due before Oct. 1 will be paid at the lower rate. After Oct. 1 they'll carry the higher charge.
The increase means most drivers will have to pay 2 percent of their vehicle's value -- triple what they now pay.
"California is broke," he said (Finance Director Steve Peace).

I just paid mine. It was due Aug 10 so I sneaked in under the wire.

It was only $89 and next year it will probably be $300.

Actually, steps are being taken to have this reversed. Sen. Tom McClintock, a Republican from Thousand Oaks has filed papers and petitions to appeal this. He just needs the support and signatures to back him. A few others are standing up also to stop this. Hope it works out.

edit: link to the story im quoting and has good info on the appeal here

This is why I like living in Nevada. I drive around in a '94 Ford Explorer. You know what it costs me to renew my registration? $33.

But what if I bought a new Viper? Well I'm not sure what I'd pay off the bat, but you know what I'd pay to renew the registration the next year? $33.

California is full of s%$# as far as car registrations go. 2% of a $13,000 vehicle -- like some low-end minivan or something -- is $260! And that's not including fees for processing, license plates, smog check, blah blah blah. Utter crap.

lol, the illegals dont drive with registration now. what difference will it make when its tripled? to them, it all ends up with the same penalty, deportation.

We pay the same in Georgia.

Any part of the fee that is based on the vehicles value is tax deductible.

For my car it'll probably be almost an extra car PAYMENT that month. And they've been trying to get a "tougher" smog check going that would run about $90 instead of $40.

...I got my car on October 9th. So I'm screwed.

Man, that is one screwed-up state. How a state with an economy that big can be broke is just astounding.

It's a glimpse into what will eventually happen nationwide with the death of the middle class. There will be rich and poor, and nothing in between because they taxed the middle class into oblivion.

what will happen poor and middle class will get stuck paying the higher registration fee and rich will write it off as business expense.
