What's the damage gonna cost me?

So here I am all uptight waiting to make a left turn on a notoriously busy street with a notoriously bad traffic light. Its that time of the day when east-west volume is 5x that of north-south volume but the lights don't adjust, so I've sat through 1 cycle already. Finally the light turns green and the left turn arrow is green, but I'm not even in the lane! I can't get in because there isn't enough room between the curb and the SUV in front of me.

The SUV starts inching up and I know I'm gonna lose the arrow and possibly the whole green light if I sit there any longer, so I slowly try to squeeeze my way into the left-turn lane. Just when I think I'm safely in, I hit the gas, and two seconds later I hear an awful SCRRAAANK sound.

I forgot about my side mirror, and in the Subaru they don't fold in like they did in my Honda. I pull over and the lady driving the SUV (who's really nice about everything) asks for my insurance info. My car is fine, but her car is possibly scraped paint and the taillight is all cracked. She was driving a Saturn Vue SUV (I thought those plastic panels didn't scratch?) and we couldn't tell if it was just the salt that scraped off or actual paint. The taillight lens is definately cracked though.

I didn't have a camera on me and we didn't want to bother with the police because it was really minor. I told her to run the quote by me first to see if I could settle out-of-pocket because I have a perfect record and I didn't want to take an insurance hit--she agreed to do this. How much do you think its gonna cost me?

If it is paint and there is any damage to the panels (denting, creasing), I imagine it will cost a decent penny. If it is just the tail light, they'll have to order a new cover for it.

taillight, you'll have to replace more than the lens. cars aren't made with replaceable lenes anymore. you'll have to pay for an entire new housing...which can be $$, especially OEM stuff. but i don't think that should be over $100.

as for the body panel. if it's just a light scratch, they may be able to buff or color sand it out..which should be $200 or under..but of course if they have to repaint, they'll have to repaint the entire body panel. look at $500 for that from a good body shop.

also you have to look at how much a quarter panel actually is. Not familiar with VUE's but some car's rear quarter panel covers a lot of the car. if it's bent, you have to replace A LOT.

my guess $2k or more.

Don't know how much it would cost, but ask for different estimates from different shops. Don't let her cheat you.

if he's at fault...it's not his choice.

wanting the best possible job done to repair your car is not 'cheating' someone.

This could be good or bad...you're lucky in that she agreed to try settling it outside of the insurance agencies and police, but then she could always take you for a ride on the price.

lol, that's actually very close assuming no additional damage.

My car recently got hit in a parking lot, slightly bent door panel, scraped off paint. Body shop estimated $700.
