What's the current pricing for carbon fiber?

This is my first time looking into carbon fiber for some fabrication. What's considered a 'good deal'? I'm assuming it's priced by square feet/inches. TIA.

It's actually risen a lot recently with the production of those new Airbuses. A lot of companies that use carbon fiber are basically hoarding it now because there's bound to be a shortage. Sorry, can't really give you numbers though.

What are you planning to fabricate, and do you have an autoclave handy?

Doesn't everyone? :p

Just a quick reality check, I mean, I'd love to finally finish my time machine, but unfortunately my local source for flux capacitors went bankrupt in the 80's:p

My local radioshack has some, I can ship them to you if you'd like. A couple went out of business and so they're clearing stuff out with a 30% discount, let me know.

I guess they need carbon fibre these days to contain the snakes, y'know.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported (last friday or saturday I think) that prices on carbon fiber and titanium are rising considerably due to the aerospace industry's rising demand.

On another note, how common is nanotube based carbon fiber?

God awfully expensive, unfortunately. There are only a small handfull of companies that produce it and the aerospace industry is a huge customer, which leaves those with other niche interests (ie the bike industry) paying a good deal more.

Depending on how much you need, you could try throwing yourself on the mercy of someone who uses it (sports equipment manufacturers, universities doing research on the stuff, etc), and hope they throw you a few scraps.

Maybe they have fake carbon fiber that looks the same. Then you could use it just like fibergalss.
