which runs Linux or Unix?

I've got a bunch of spare computers at work which are't doing squat.

Thinking of installing Linux/Unix on them since Windows NT is just pointless on there.

(I can think of more uses out of a unix box then a windows box, but hey, that's just me)

They are Pentium 2 (the megahertz vary).

Wonders if it's even worth keeping the motherboards or just replacing them with something better.

I have a spare P II machine, but.... I wouldn't call it crappy.
To keep it short, it's a trusty little IBM Intellistation E Pro and it's been with me since ever, and I am too attached to it to let it go, and it's been chugging along on my desk for years now.
It serves as a Streaming Audio / Video playing /recording machine, it has loads of MP3 and MPEGS on it, and it is pretty much my HTPC as I have it most of the time hooked up to my Stereo and might try to get a decent PCI Linux supportes card so I can hook it up to my TV.

I have recently sold my AMD 64 Gaming rig and the leftover parts were given as a reward to my IBM for it's trustworthiness and reliability Specs :

Stock Photo

IBM INtellistation E Pro

Fedora Core 4

-PII 450MHZ.
-Chaintech 7.1 24-bit Surround Card PCI
-SONY DRU 710-A Dual DVD Burner ATA
-80 GB SATA Western Digital SE 7200 RPM 8 MB cahce HDD
-Matrox Mellennium AGP 2X card (soon to be replaced with a PCI with Video out suppport in Linux).
-Thermaltake XASER 480 Watts PSU ( not that it's needed but it's lying around and I was like what the hell why not LOL)
- SATA / USB 2.0/Firewire Controller 2 ports each

To be honest the performance is pretty sweet for a PII, but of course that major contribution is due to the fact that it's NOT running an OS that is % 90 Bloat-Ware and the rest % 10 crappy semi-functional code ;)

Have you ever seen anyone treat his / her old IBM with more respect than me ? No one spoils an IBM more The Linxuator does, and that's a fact SON, Call 1-800-SPOIL-IBM NOW!!! :p

I still have an Abit BP-6 dual celeron 366@550 w/ 512MB RAM with an original TNT card. I have Debian on it and use it as a home server.

PII 400 as an Itunes server - Its amazing how well old hardware runs with modern ram and hard drives

My slowest running is an dual 400 Ultra2. I do have a 167Mhz Ultra1, but it's not being used because the onboard SCSI port broke a while back.

Packard Bell (originally with 133mhz pentium) Now a cyrex 200 mhz overdrive cpu in it
is the crappiest but its just sitting in the closet for now not enough time to play with one more machine.

I would have to make a floppy boot for it though and besides maybe DSL linux I think it would be a waste of time.

My wife's old HP Celeron 433Mhz mini-tower system....it's a pain to add even simple things like RAM because of the space, but works great as a small file server running W2K + UltraVNC (for remote management).

This is inspiring me to get off my ass and put something on the 100mhz 486 that's going to waste in my closet right now.

If it has a PCI slot, put a promise ata100 controller in it and a big disk.
It will make a nice quiet fileserver.

I'm pretty sure that would be P2.

It's also not that crappy... bought recently but a very very cheap build ~£300. Like most people's I think its used as a audio/visual/backup server for the Xbox 360 & and an awesome set of Phillips Wireless headphones I use to listen in the Garden / Walking the dog round the block.

Sempron 2800
Some Gigabyte Mobo
512mb Ram
200GB sATA HD
Radeon 9600 Pro
DVD Burner/Floppy/Other Irrelevant Stuff

It dual boots Ubuntu 5.10 and Vista

Ubuntu & Gnome runs like sh1t.
Vista flies

Go figure!
