If you look on most credit literature (especially credit cards) it will state "calling may not preserve your rights" which means the BEST and ONLY method to close your account is:

Snail mail a signed letter with your name, address, complete credit card account number, sign and date it. Then mail it to their customer service/correspondence department.

I agree with rossman.

Why are you closing your card? I was considering closing my Sony that was transferred from Citi to Bank One when my first statement showed up with a late fee, and an overdraft fee when I never used the card. Then an email to customer service went unanswered for a week. Called them up ready to close it when they made everything better.

Call first, then follow that with a written notice. If you're paranoid, a few days after your call, try to use the card and see if works or not. (Of course, if it works, you'll end up with another charge to your account, so . . . )

Truthfully, over the years, and yes, I am THAT old, calling the CC does the trick for me, but you never know.

wow. u had bad experiences with citibank? im closing my bank one cuz i wanted a card that gives me cash back on gas. my bank one visa doesnt do that. so i got the citibank divident platinum select mastercard....gives 5% cashback on gas and groceries

well i havent received the citibank card yet. they sent me a letter saying that they couldnt verify my SSN and my phone #...so they asked for a copy of my SS card or a copy of my driver's liscence and a copy of my bank statement plus a copy of my phone bill

seems like they are asking for a lot...so im kinda iffy about sending them all that info...esp a copy of my bank statement.

what do u guys think?

If it's your first credit card, or one you've had for a long time, then just keep it.

I had great experience with citibank. This happened when the Sony Card stopped being Citibank and changed to a BankOne card. They got me all pissed off but made it better. The CSR Amber was great, sounded cute (big plus), reversed all the fees, and got everything else straightened out.

no the bank one isnt my first card. had it for almost 2 years but hardly use it cuz i use my AMEX as my primary card. but recently i started commuting 70 miles a day to work...so gas prices are hitting me hard. looked around for a gas card and found the citibank dividend card. gonna use the citibank card only for gas and groceries (cuz thats where i get cash back with the citibank)

other than that....im gonna use my newly acquired AMEX starwood preferred guest card as my primary card. this one is also a new card for me cuz i recently switched from a AMEX blue to this one :D
