Whats the command in DOS to reformat?

Ok well once you turn on the computer how do you proceed to reformat?

Or can I just install Linux over the existing OP system?

Linux will partition & format the drive on its own.

I can't be too sure, but... I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the DOS command to format is... format.

Yes.. but there is not a true DOS mode while running the Windows XP operating system.

Boot your system up with the alternate operating system of choice and use its utilities to setup your disk.

Its not only limited to formatting.. what u have to do is partitioning ... Linux need at least two partion to work on is "/ "(root) and other is /swap (swap partion) ... as for the filesystem is concerned u can even install linux in Fat filesystem (though it would be a bit slow)
