I desire to work out, but don't have a ton of money to spend. What's the cheapest way to work out? I'm already hiking in the hills behind my house for cardio, what do I do for 'weight training'?

If you're a college student, during the year you should have access to the campus facilities for free.

In the meantime, check craigslist for a deal on a bench + weights.

I should mention I refuse to do any sort of physical activity where anyone can see me.

What should be looking ofr specifically on craigslist?

You dont want peopel to see you? Unless you look like quasimodo, no one gives a flying fvck what you're doing at the gym. Get over it and hit the treadmill

You should be able to get a bench with flat, incline, and decline for under $50.

Should be able to get a couple hundred lbs of weights for under $75. Look for Olympic style bar + weights.

Then look for a set of dumbbells for under $50.

For under $200 (at the very max, sometimes you can find weights + bench for $80), you should be able to find everything you need to get a good workout regiment going.

Ya, the faster you can get over that fear the better you'll feel about yourself in general. People see you as you see yourself.

It's not the ugly thing. I'm not horrible looking. It's that almost all my self esteem is tied up in my ableness. I am less than able when it comes to physical activity. Therefore, I only ever do it alone.

Thanks. Do I have to worry about being spotted with an Olympic style bar?

Unless you can't walk, you should go to the gym and hit the treadmill or elliptical. No one is going to judge you if yo'ure just walking

But I will judge me. And I can walk at home, in the desert, where no one can see me.

You have to worry about being spotted with any type of heavy workout. If you're lifting a weight that you're not confident you can do repeatedly on your own, you absolutely need a spot. Hell, you should have a spot anyway just in case something goes wrong (Murphy's Law). With free weights, things can go wrong very quickly, especially if you're not experienced.

Having a spot is also going to allow you to workout heavier, leading to better gains and results.

Yeah, see, that's a problem. None of my friends are at all interested in working out, and all of my family members are weaklings. Do you have another sugestion that doesn't involve me hurting myself?

I judge myself constantly.

Why are we still discussing this. I do not engage in physical activity in sight of other people. End of story.

Lift lighter. That's really all there is to it unless you want to pony up the money for a machine.

Working out without a spot isn't that dangerous if you know what to do when you're going to fail and remain composed. Not just dropping the bar on your chest/head, lowering it gently, and then sliding it off, for example.

Makes sense. I drive every day, I don't see how this could be more dangerous.

So obviously you're worried about other people judging you and not you judging yourself because if it's you juding yourself, it'd be the same no matter where you are.

Note what I'm saying doesn't apply for much heavier weights. There's not that much strain placed on your body if you lower a 135lb bar/weights onto your chest or with 30lb dumbbells. Things change drastically when it's a 250+lb bench or 400lb squat, or you have to worry about failing with 75lb dumbbells above your head.

No, I'm judging myself based on my delusion that others are judging me on my ability to preform physical activities because my self esteem is based on competence, and if I think that others think that I might be incompetent at something, it messes with my self esteem.

It's a psycosis. Get over it.

Those giving the OP a hard time quit being lazy and give him a break. If you don't know a solution to his question then don't post "oh well just do such and such and get it over with," that isn't what he's looking for.

To the OP, next time come up with a better excuse such as, "I want to really freak out my friends/family by getting into really good shape so that they'll freak out or not even recognize me from my former, tub-o-lard, self - and the only way to do this is if no one sees me working out."

As for my solution, maybe this? --> http://www.fitdeck.com/fit/index.htm

Well, change.

Only you can choose how fit you wish to be, and your irrational phobia is limiting that choice. Doing physical activity on your own will help your physical development. In your case, I'd say that pushing yourself to start doing physical activity in front of others will help your physical, emotional, social, and psychological development.

Mind you, I know the feeling--I'm a very strong walker, but my upper body strength is next to nil--but you should realize that doing regular exercise at all already puts you way ahead of the curve.
