It's good to see no matter how long I am gone for, Off Topic hardly ever changes.

[Edit] Never mind. Excellent choice in home protection weapon. The sound alone should scare off most intruders.

Walk in and ask if you can get a shotgun and the ammo for it at the same time. Then ask them if they can load it for you and give you a second. :p

We did this to someone one night, freaked him out as he thought my friend was going to shot him or something. Even the manager that he called was laughing when I told him. Mind you this is when I work at wal-mart so i would not try it as it may lead to jail. :)

What do you want the shotgun for? If you're going to use it for hunting, then I'd avoid simply searching for the cheapest shotgun... If you're using it for home protection, I'd get a .22

Generally, they're lighter, plus you'd have 10 shots vs. 1 shot with a cheap shotgun.

I have a Ruger Mark II .22LR pistol. It won't even knock down the metal groundhogs at the pistol range. :disgust:

Maybe he's going to off himself. No real reason to spend more than you have to if you're only gonna shoot the gun once.

Getting hit with a .22 is nothing. You don't hit vitals the person is probably not gonna stop coming. A 12 gauge they get knocked down and they're prolly not gonna get up. A 12 gauge is the perfect home defense weapon. Amazing a close quarters, the sound scares off most intruders and it won't go through walls.

Anyone happen to know the law for New York state? Can you buy a shotgun + ammo no problem at wal-mart or is there some kind of restriction / waiting period / etc.?

BAHAHAHAHA, knocked down by a .12 guage????

BAHAHAHAHA, you do know that NO normal, house defending gun has enough power to knock someone down... because if it did, it would knock the shooter down as well...

.22 for home defense is a very bad choice compared to a shotgun.

Is that a joke?

Don't see why it would be, while a .22 may not be as powerful as a .12, it should be pleanty for home protection.

because you will have to be a superior marksman with a .22 to have a shot at stopping your invader, while with a shotgun, 12 ga, it wont over-penetrate and you have a much higher chance of getting a good hit.

Get a remington 870 for HD.

And 12 ga is a gauge not a caliber. 12 ga is somewhere around .72 caliber, I think. Compare that to a .22 caliber rifle and you can see why people use shotguns and NOT .22's for home defense.

Oops, I suppose I could have been a little more specific. I meant a lighter gauge shotgun. I don't know a ton about guns, but wouldn't a lower gauge shotgun also work well?
