I'm putting together a computer for my wifes parents and need an OS.
Should I just look for a deal in the FS fourms , or is there a better option ?

Newegg sells OEM versions of Windows that are legal to buy with a hard drive or motherboard. Other than that, FS/FT forum.

Well if I were you I would try Mandrake Linux for a week or 2 it is free and works very well. If they dont like it then buy windows. You have nothing to lose.

Bleep

EBay works - also Dirt Cheap Software - and on occasion - a yard sale.

Second on the yard sale, flea market, etc. Buy an old computer with the CAB files on the hard drive.
Take the OS and the parts you want. Sell or give away the rest. Just make sure that you get a non-branded
PC because Dell and some of the others try to make sure the OS will only install on their brand of computer.
I'm pretty sure this is legal because the computer you bought is not using the OS any more.

I got WinXP Home Edition on the FSFT forum for $50 shipped. It's pretty easy to find OEM version or just old used copies for pretty cheap.

If you know any students they usually have amazing deals through their schools. My school sells WinXP Pro for $10!

That might not necessarily be legal. The academic licensing might only allow the student to use the software while he or she is at the university. They also might not be allowed to transfer the license. There might be other limitations too.

It's not. OEM licenses are not transferable. They must stay with the hardware they were purchased for. It's pretty lame, yes, but that's Microsoft for you.
