I will be putting together a system next weekend. I will be using the Abit Kt7 (non raid) and I want to duron or Tbird (preferably Tbird) that will overclock to or past 1Ghz reliably. What speed should I get ? I know of the pencil/conductive pen trick, but is theres anything else I need to do with such a setup to overclock ?

Also, what should I expect to pay for a descent heatsink/fan combo ? I know I don't want to use a P3 jobbie becuase I can get a crushed silicon pancake ;)

Thanks,
Dan

750 durons have gone 1GHz

But a 850 Thunderbird should hit it and then some.(just make sure it is blue Really blue look at it from different angles fingure prints and other things might make it look blue and have seen this with my own eyes).

A good heatsink that is hard to determine

every company has their newest and best heatsinks that will fit a Thunderbird i suggest an Alpha or Globalwin as they are easy to come buy but if you want an exotic you should get the Articcooler or the Hetchhog.

Thanks for the info.

I thought that only the 900Mhz TBirds were copper. Well, I will be buying at computer show anyway so I will get a chance to look the proc over before deciding.

I just ordered a TaiSol combo. Great price and pretty positive comments in the fourm.

If I were you i'd go for the Tbird 850. I'm sure you could easily hit 1ghz with the taisol hsf.

The stock speed is not important, look at the manufacturing date. AKBA00xx
week31 and later durons have a very good chance of hitting 1 gig easily. Buy from a store that deals with high volumes of cpus and you'll get a recent one.

700 durons will probably hit 1 gig
so will the 750 tbirds

but for sure things go for the
750 duron
and the 850 tbird

Ixbt-Labs has a post with a chart showing some of the overclocking maxs they have recorded for the Duron.
The link is to the archives, so just scroll down the page to get to the chart.
Their conclusion is that ANY Duron from week 36 on has the potential to o/c to 1000, no matter what the marked "official" speed.:)

Thanks for the help guys,

Am I correct in thinking that i should be looking at the
AKBA00xx where the xx indicates the week it was produced in ?

I have a 750 T-bird week 31 that will run all day long at 900 Mhz default voltage, but at 1.85v and water it will hit 980Mhz. Can't get it any further. (Actually I might be able to get it further, but don't wan't to lower my memory timing Cas2 at 222.) It is a green core. So look for the purple core or buy something closer to your 1Ghz speed.

The week 24 blue 750's seem to be the only ones able to hit over 1 gig, seems that that week they binned the high quality chips to 750's in dresden. Probably 750 was the highest speed at the time or they just was short on 750's.
