Cheapest is the qx9650 if I'm not mistaken, which would be 1000$ or so, mainstream 45nm qaudcores haven't been released yet.

Isn't the cheapest 45mm quad-core Q9300? Or is 9300 still 65nm? It's listed in the shops but not quite yet available. Costs 280-300? (405-435USD).

But socket 771 means a server MB, which are 2-3X $$$ of a single socket 775 MB.

Only Skulltrail I believe. But you can get a dual-socket 771 for $400 (only a little more than an Asus RoG board) and have an octo-core system.

Not at all, I thought I aknowledged your excellent answer, even if I did wink you. I might add an answer I'd of never thought to provide.

I was simply exploring the nuances of your interesting reply. I fairly common occurance in this and all forums. Often I learn much more from the deviation of the OP questions, than the direct answer.

We are in full agreement I enjoy when threads evolve so long as the OP doesn't take offense.

As to the question of overclocking server boards...my understanding is that you can BSEL mod to overlock XEON's by changing the default FSB but the question then becomes one of does the BIOS allow you to change Vcore or NB voltage.

Its definitely outside my realm of expertise. I wouldn't buy a Harpertown, just not comfortable with my lack of experience with that part of the hardware world.

There was a supermicro board I was looking at a while back which uses standard DDR2, not FBDIMM, and is dual-socket 771. You can't do SLI (just one 16x PCIe) but you could do CF (16x-4x) IRC. I'll be damned if I can't remember the mobo name though, it has been a few months.
