See them all over the place and they sound decent but is there more to it ? Never actually looked into them but Im sure there's some kind of hook in them. Anyone know of any or what the catch is ? Also are there any advantages or disadvantages to using them over a regular long distance company?

If the person isn't home, and their husband/wife/brother/etc. answers and tells you to call back, you just spend $0.99 for a 3-second call with 10-10-220. You better make sure they'll be home.

I use 10-10-555 all the time. Just make sure you use those first 20 minutes.

LD carriers kept trying to rape us, so we have none now.

I've used the 10-10-987 one; 39 cents to connect, 3 cents a minute - it gets added to my regular phonebill. No catch so far as I can see.

When I took tcp/ip class back in college our professor explained the truth behind these lines. All these 10-10-* numbers are actually owned by your major phone companies. However, these lines run over lower quality cables or they jam more data over the fiber-optic line. As the result the quality is slightly lower. However, the phone companies don't want to associate themselves w/ lower quality calls and that is why you don't see their names during the commercial.

Dunno if that's true though.

Those are just different IXC's using the same equipment. They are different companies.

10-10-987 is great. You are going to pay the $0.39 whether or not the person you call answers, but it's only $0.03/min if they are home. My suggestion, call collect and have your buddy refuse the call. Then, you know if he's home so you don't waste the $0.39 connection charge. This also applies to lots of Europe as well.

I've been using 10-10-636 for years now, it's great. Five cents a minute, no connect charge, just five cents a minute.

Who the hell would use one of those 10-10 numbers when you can just use onesuite.com and get 2.5 cents/minute? No minimum 20 minute call or any other gimmick.

for those in the Northeast, I recommend seeing if you have a local number for USA Datanet (usadatanet.com, sorry, no linke, did quick reply)

It's like 5 cents/minute for the first 20 min. After that you can talk as long as you want for 99 cents. So basically, the most you'll spend on a phone call is 99 cents.

I used it all the time until I got my cell phone

I've never heard of that. I knew a guy who's parents were into these... i mean actually selling these kind of services. What they did was purchase huge quantities of time from the phone companies at a huge discount, then would sell the time to individual customers or small businesses just like these commercialize ones do.
