I think the WD Black series has been great from SATA-II through SATA-III. I have several of the older ones running here in the house. I think those had a factory warranty of 5 years. And I recycle or reuse drives in the household for various purposes. I just don't think -- for the difference between the EBay price offering and the actual price at resellers -- that I'd buy a used drive even if the seller said it "hadn't really been used (or much).

Again, as I've shared over and over in this thread, I've done splendidly with all but one of my almost 300 eBay purchases, including this WD black I am on, identical to the one I should have been awake to bid on.

Everything from puter components (and three Optiplexes, including the one I am on this moment, and from another vendor my RAM upgrade) to low riser jeans (New with tags) to awarded orchids......you name it, I have gotten it on ebay and ALWAYS HUGE BARGAINS. But U gotta know what things are worth, be able to judge a given vendor, and it's a learning curve as is everything, and not perfect.

At this juncture, what's your point? Move on. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to buy stuff on eBay. If you've had good luck there, that's great. Set up an eBay watch for that drive model number if you've fallen in love with it. There will be more of them.

I've purchased a number of used HDDs, but I'd never do so without a SMART report from the seller. There's no assurance that the drive doesn't already have bad sectors, or that it's on its way to failing.

Very smart re SMART. Clearly, I asked her about this in my first email and she replied
as she did. But, also true, I asked for and received no diagnostic reports on any drive I have gotten on ebay....including Piggy the one I am writing form right now.

I run diagnostics the minute I throw them in and hook them up.

For what this twin to the drive I am on went for, the inherent risk factor, I think, would have been worth it.

It's also unfair to expect beyond reasonable from anyone....including ebay vendors. I think, esp when we are saving serious money on a relatively low ticket item.

Nothing to be annoyed at here, babe. No two opportunities on ebay alike; esp with "previously owned" items. Pls get that. I do not apologize for being upset with myself. Feeling that, expressing that honestly, allows it to diminish. Pretending it is not there, or trying to send it to the recycle bin.... does the opposite.

I mentioned setting up an eBay watch for the model WD5002AALX. You can also create searches in the For Sale forum here and on HardForum for the same drive. Run them periodically and I'll bet you find as good or better a deal on one of these classifieds.

O! Brilliant! I never set up an ebay watch!!! THANK YOU. Yes, was in a rush and missed that part of your post.

But, better deal than what that one went for....assuming, of course, it wasn't one of the many bad ones the model is famous for.....I doubt.

I keep wondering, given what I learned from the email exchange.....where she got these drives? Remember, she implied all of them were in opened, original, boxes.

I have no idea what that indicates, but it indicates something.

Edit: I remember clearly, not that long ago...tho before outsourcing destroyed everything, U just delved, decided upon the drive you felt was right for you and got one. You could pretty much depend on consistent quality within the brand and the model.

Same deal with PSUs! When, I now know needlessly, I chose to upgrade the PSU in my now backup desktop, I wanted Antec, chose a low money cause not modular model online for the best price. End of story.

Remember when we din have to stress over is this a normal one or a messed up one re components? When this stuff was NOT A CRAP SHOOT.

Just struck me.... everyone in Malaysia must have WD HDDs.....made in Malaysia. Including everyone at Malaysian Airlines.

And?

And, nothing. (I am just in my lunatic phase, and still upset at myself that I slept thru getting an almost free WD Black twin to mine.)
