I've always wanted to be a groundpounder, 68W Combat Medic since I was very young and I've been given the opportunity to basically revamp my life.

I know there's this huge thing on these forums against non college grads, but how about Combat medic to say, later in life after I'm no longer eligible for active duty, EMT? Does anyone have any experience coming out of the army?

I don't know about the Army, but I've been successful in the civilian world without finishing my college degree as a result of my training in the Navy.

Going to EMT sounds reasonable... although you could well decide after ten years to cross-train to a different specialty.

You'll get a shitload of training while in the Army including the full EMT course. This is actually available to everyone and I almost wish that I took it just for more medical knowledge.

Even if secondary education is necessary after an enlistment, you'll be financially set with the current MGIB. I'm going to college after my enlistment without taking out any student loans or spending the money that I saved up during my 3.5 years active duty.

Also, you may or may not have time to knock out some college while in the Army. I only took one class while I was in, but could have easily been done with at least one full year of school. All free of course.

I'm a medic (the proper name is 68W - Health Care Specialist) in the Army National Guard. I've been in for 21 years, with about 12 active.

I started off in the 82d Airborne Division as a medic and then re-trained as a Respiratory Specialist. I got out of active duty and went to the National Guard as a medic, again.

The training that you will receive is extensive. 16 weeks at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX 78234. You will be registered as a NREMT-B after successful completion of the course. In practice, you'll discover that you're actually performing at more of a NREMT-I level (I.V.'s, medications, cardiac monitoring, etc...)

It's not enough to make a decent living on the outside, though. Go to college while you're in, as TallBill suggested. Just like life, you're going to get exactly what you put in to the Army.

PM me for more info.

To answer your topic title,

E-1 through E-4 is the beginning skill level 1 thus your MOS is 68W1O (not zero, the O is actually a Skill Qualification Identifier - SQI!)
E-5 = 68W2O
E-6 = 68W3O
E-7 = 68W4O
E-8 = 68W5O or 68W5M (First Sergeant)
E-9 = 68Z or whatever MOS is for Comand Sergeant Major

Those pay grades can be found here.
